The Northeastern Section of the American
Chemical Society

The
Northeastern Section consists of Full Members,
Student Members, Local Society Affiliates
and Local Section Affiliates. |
|
Full
Members |
Members of the American Chemical
Society who reside within the boundaries of the Northeastern
Section are automatically members of the Local Section.
[A member of the ACS who prefers membership in a Local
Section other than that of residence may, upon written
request to the Executive Director of the ACS, be assigned
to that Local Section.] Local Section dues are voluntary
for ACS members. Members who elect to pay the
Local Section dues, may do so on their annual ACS renewal
forms. Members have the right to vote,
to hold an office within the Section, and to hold an
elective position. |

Local
Student Members (Undergraduates and Graduates) |
Student
Members are those who are full-time students and
actively working toward an undergraduate degree or
a graduate degree in a chemical science or in a related
field of natural science, engineering, technology
or science education from an accredited educational
institution, or one acceptable to the ACS Council
Committee on Membership Affairs. A Student Member
is entitled to all privileges of membership except
that of holding an elective position in the ACS or
in the Local Section. If the bylaws of the
local section permit, a Student Member may hold an
elective position other than Councilor or Alternate
Councilor. A student member of the ACS is automatically
is a member of the Northeastern Local Section if
the student’s primary residence is within the
boundaries of the Northeastern Section. Primary
Residence is defined by the ACS as the mailing address
given on the ACS application form for delivery of
membership materials. [A member of the ACS who prefers
membership in a Local Section other than that of
residence may, upon written request to the Executive
Director of the ACS, be assigned to that Local Section.] |

Local
Society Affiliates/Non-Scientists |
American Chemical Society Affiliates
are persons whose major vocational effort is directly
concerned with the practice of a chemical science but
who do not meet the requirements to be a Full Member
of the American Chemical Society. Society Affiliates
who reside within the boundaries of the Northeastern
Section are automatically Society Affiliate members
of the Local Section. [A member of the ACS who
prefers membership in a Local Section other than that
of residence may, upon written request to the Executive
Director of the ACS, be assigned to that Local Section.] Society
Affiliates cannot hold an office within the Local Section,
cannot hold an elective position and do not have the
right to vote, but may be appointed as Committee Chairs
in accordance with the Local Section bylaws. Local
Section dues are voluntary for Society Affiliates. Members
who elect to pay the Local Section dues, may do so
on their annual ACS renewal forms. |

Local
Section Affiliates (Membership in national ACS not
required) |
Local Section Affiliates are
persons who reside within the boundaries of the Northeastern
Section, have an earned bachelor’s or higher
degree in a chemical science or a related field of
natural science, engineering, technology or science
education from an accredited educational institution,
or one acceptable to the ACS Council Committee on Membership
Affairs; an associate degree or equivalent in a chemical
science or related field of technology from an appropriately
accredited educational institution; or certification,
licensure, or other qualifications as a pre-college
teachers of chemical science. Local
Science Affiliates may also be persons who have less
formal training and significant documented work experience
in chemical sciences, chemical technology, or chemical
education as representing achievement equivalent to
that in any of the provisions above. One year
of full-time relevant work experience is considered
equivalent to one year of full-time education and training. Persons
who meet the membership requirements of the American
Chemical Society, as indicated, may become members
of the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical
Society as Local Section Affiliates without joining
the national American Chemical Society. Local
Section Affiliates pay annual dues established by the
Board of Directors in conformity to the Section’s
bylaws payable upon receipt of a statement from the
Treasurer. As members, they can hold an office within
the Section, but cannot hold an elective position and
do not have the right to vote. Persons interested
in Local Section Affiliation are to complete and to
submit an application for Local Section Membership
to the Section’s Membership Committee for election
to the Section as a Local Section Affiliate. |
